The new 410,000 SF Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro will accommodate 312 patients requiring mental health treatment. It will replace the existing Cherry Hospital which opened in 1880. The 170-acre building site is currently used for agricultural research.
The new 3-story facility will bring all hospital functions under one roof, replacing the existing campus of unconnected buildings. A 760 foot “Main Street” connector stitches the various programmatic pieces together so the hospital as a whole functions much like a linear village. Building wings for diagnostics, treatment, and administration are to one side of the Main Street while patient residences and recreational programs are connected to the other side.
The Main Street allows for mental health services to be provided through the “treatment mall” approach for patient care. Patients will relocate from their residential unit to the treatment mall during the day for training and therapy. This change in environment has been shown to be helpful for patient rehabilitation as they prepare in most cases to return to their communities after treatment. The treatment mall will provide patients with access to classrooms, dining and recreation facilities, as well as a library, barber/beauty shop, music room and a meditation room. Critical to the treatment is convenient access to the numerous exterior courtyards along the Main Street.
